Abstract

Patellar tendinitis is a common injury among high-impact athletes and represents a significant challenge in functional rehabilitation. This study followed an experimental technological development design with a pilot pre–post validation approach, aiming to design and preliminarily evaluate a personalized knee support integrating controlled thermotherapy and vibratory stimulation. The sample consisted of one male participant with a history of patellar tendinitis and engagement in high-impact sports, selected according to predefined inclusion criteria. The device was developed through three-dimensional scanning and parametric modeling, incorporating an embedded system based on an ESP32 microcontroller with Bluetooth connectivity for mobile control. The evaluated variables included knee flexion and rotation angles during gait, indirect estimation of patellofemoral load, surface temperature achieved by the thermal module, operational performance of the vibration system, and perceived usability of the mobile interface. The analysis method involved descriptive pre–post comparison of gait patterns, controlled electrical and thermal measurements of the system, and percentage-based analysis of usability testing responses. Results showed an estimated 6% reduction in patellar load, stable thermal regulation within clinically safe ranges (38–45 °C), and favorable functional acceptance. Although findings correspond to a preliminary exploratory validation, the prototype demonstrates potential as an intelligent orthotic solution for personalized knee rehabilitation.
